First Timer Tips
Be Prepared For Your First Class
Here are a few tips for your first class:
• Bring a water bottle.
• Wear clothing that is cool and allows for movement.
• Wear aerobic or cross training shoes.
• We use floor mats at most classes; Glen Ellyn has plenty available for your use; Naperville-some available;
• Hand weights and leg weights are optional. Hand weights are available at class on a first come first serve basis. Leg weights can be purchased through Jazzertogs when you're ready to add leg weights to your workout.
• Sweat towels come in handy, too.
Tips For The First Time Jazzerciser
• Stand near the center of the class, so the instructor is easily seen from all directions.
• The aerobic segment of class will progress from feeling “fairly light” to “somewhat hard” to “hard” and begin back down to “fairly light”. Track your progress on the Perceived Exertion Chart displayed on the wall and listen to where your instructors says you should be on the chart during each song.
• Listen and watch for cues from your instructor on how to modify difficult movements or lower the intensity and or impact of a routine.
• You may find choreography to be challenging initially. It is okay to march in place if you can’t figure out how to do a step. Most of us catch on after a couple of classes.
• You are encouraged to use weights, but please follow the following guidelines: Use weights only when told to do so by your instructor and only after the movements become familiar to you and can be performed easily.
• During the floor exercises, do not try to complete all repetitions. Instead, focus on proper technique as demonstrated and explained by your instructor. Your ability to complete all reps will come as you become more accustomed to exercise. In the meantime, if you feel burning in your muscles, stop and stretch, joining back in when you feel ready.
• The exercises should never cause pain. If it hurts, don’t do it! Stop, Rest, Stretch, and inform your instructor after class that you need a modification.
• Expect mild muscle discomfort up to two days after class. This is normal and will lessen as you become more fit
• Most of all! Welcome to Jazzercise! Relax and enjoy!
